I have the option to buy a laptop with an i5 520m processor with an ATI FirePro 8720M graphics card or an i5 560m processor with a Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M graphics card.

Which laptop would be less noisy?

ATI FirePro is TDP of 50W. Nvidia FX is TDP of 75W.

If it is the same notebook chances are that they will create equally much noise since the fan have threshold they both will hit anyways. But spec wise the Nvidia will create more heat. :) If it is two different notebooks it is impossible to answer.

Often, different GPUs have different heatsinks even in the "same" model of laptop. So, it's impossible to answer, particularly if these are two different laptops.

On top of that, noise is something quite subjective. I suppose it would be possible to measure the sound levels with decibel detection gear, but it is expensive and you'd need to have both laptops in the same environment. You could look for a review of the laptop model from a tech site like Anandtech, they usually measure the decibel levels under maximum load and that should give you some idea of the worst noise level you'll hear provided you have something to compare it with.

I would say to check the specific model reviews online to gauge if you find their noise levels acceptable or not.

Coming from my new Alienware, i7 Extreme edition CPU and Crossfire video cards, it is LOUD. Gaming it is almost quieter to stand next to an airplane taking off.
