I was wondring if it possible to upgrade the graphics cards of my e1505.
My current card is an ATI Radeon X1400 256MB and I was thinking of changing it to a NVidia GeForce 7800 or higher (maybe 7900GS) or Radeon X1600 512MB if possible. I doubt this will work, but I just want to make sure if I can do it or not.
oh, and I have a stupid question here, does the e1505 have the same power as the e1705? because they have the same processor, same ram (exept the frequencies) and maybe the same hard drive? the only thing that I found diffrent is the graphics cards (e1505= Radeon X1400) (e1705= GeForce 7900GS)

you can upgrade to any card that is originally offered with the system. if you have the highest card offered with the system, then you can't upgrade any farther.

i see, thanks for the informations.
but is it possible that dell will make a stronger video card that is compatible with some older inspiron version (in the futur)? I heard that is might be possible but not definite (dell are only concentrating on newer stuff).

It has been made clear many times that it is impossible to upgrade a laptop video card unless it is that comes with the system

My question is, since everyone is always saying you can only upgrade the laptop with the vid cards originally available to order with the system, since they are made specifically for certain laptop models, wouldn't that mean it would be possible to upgrade from the lowest vid card offered for a certain system (say, Intel integrated crappo card) to the best card offered (in the E1505 (which I have) the x1400?) if you could find one for sale?

Well, I don't see why not!!!
The pci express slot is the same, but there is a problem of size, I guess you will have to remove capacitors and some other bulky components and push them to the sides in order to put the card in place, and you will have to cut parts form the cooler of the card to make it smaller(be careful with the electronic part though!)
If I had an inspiron e1505 I would do this experiment !!!

The only thing I am not sure about is the bios upgrade, because the e1705 has 2 fans inside and one of them is for the video card!, the bios must be different, let's hope the difference is not too much, maybe the MB has a fan plug which is not used(without providing a place for the fan!).

I wish I have an E1505 to try that on it... it is will be like those shows about renovating cars lol

I will do it when my warranty expires.

That is, if I can find a x1400 to try it with -_-

I think the best thing to do is to assume you won't be able to upgrade the GPU of any notebook.

Oh how I yearn for a standard in notebook GPUs. Of course then we'll all be concerned with cooling...
