Having 2 sticks will enable dual channel memory which increases the bandwidth available. Other than that they are the same.

The processor has no bearing on how many sticks of ram you have. You should either check your invoice or check for yourself.

No, not necessary, you can run either 1 or 2 sticks. As Johnny mentioned the processor has no bearing on how many memory modules you use.

If you're limiting yourself to 1GB with no intention of upgrading, I would go with the two sticks because that enable dual channel functionality. Otherwise, if you intend to upgrade, two sticks would take up too many slots. If you want 2GB RAM, go with the one stick.

Make sure both sticks have the same specs or dual channel won't work.

IMHO, if you just want 1GB of ram, fill any 1 slot, now you have more options later, ie. 1.5GB.

From the only reports I read, dual channel is not effective or you will not see any real speed increase with our 1705s.

    Check out; http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=2766

    under user upgrades.

I would hope other chip sets work fine with daul channel?

my problem is, one slot is filled with a factory preloaded 2mb stick

i was debating on whether to just add another gig stick or to remove the 2mb stick and get two 512s

and i'm not sure about the warranty issue if i do remove the first stick, ah so confused

Are you asking about the IBM laptops? If it comes with one 2GB(?) stick then your set! That's way expensive stuff and plenty of memory for day to day use. Check your owners manual under ram upgrades, but should support another .5 to 2GB (compatible) stick of your choice.

yes, but it comes with 2 MB, not gigs

i saw it on their site last night, and i'm starting to think they did some serious mistyping on the model, so i'm trying to make a quick decision and grab it while it's still at that price + specs

    http://caipsgws001.can.ibm.com/store/family?type=fb&action=search&family=ThinkPad+Z+Series

it's 1600 and somewhere near the middle of the page

    UPDATE:

meh i don't really care that much, getting a friend to order it right now

if you're looking for a laptop, get this while it lasts

just for comparison, the z61t (has preloaded 512 ram, a slightly faster dvdrw drive, and a smaller screen) goes for 2300 CAD on the site
