Okay this might be an extremely stupid question, but I've been reading up on socket 989 and most places are saying that first and second gen Intel processors should be compatible with this socket.

So this is what I'm asking:

    1. will a 2nd gen i3/i5/i7 cpu work on the hm55 chipset?
    2. would a 2nd gen i3/i5/i7 cpu fit/ and work in this laptop?

The laptop I'm using is an ASUS G51JX-3D with an i7-720QM, with a GTS 360M, 8gb Ram

The best processor you can upgrade to is a 920/40XM

    Hi,

Sorry to "dig out" this topic, but my question is the same way.

    I have a Toshiba Satellite L775-197 with a core i3-380M (2 cores, 2.53GHz, TDP 35W) on socket rPGA989 and chipset HM55.

    The socket rPGA989 support both G1 (rPGA988A) and G2 (rPGA988B) processors.

I tried to change with a core i7-3632QM (4 cores, 2.2GHz, TDP 35W), but it doesn't work, like for timmy112; no beep, no BIOS error, no BSOD, nothing...

    Why?

Is it because of the HM55 chipset?

Which processor could I put to upgrade to i5 or i7?

    Best regards,

    Nicolas

The socket is the same, but the pin-out is COMPLETELY different between 1st gen and 2nd gen. It's the same for 2nd and 3rd gen though, and there are some HTPC MoBos which support both 2nd and 3rd gen. No laptops as far as I know, maybe it's a BIOS away, maybe it requires new South Bridge as well, I don't know. The South Bridges (6x and 7x, NOT 5x) share the same BGA, so even if it requires chip-set swap, it wont be impossible, just expensive, which defeats the purpose. Unless uniqueness that is :D

Lol brownie points for trying. Yeah, number of pins may be similar but pinouts totally different. If you really really want I do have an old 920xm which should be compatible.

No no no!! Why brownie points!!!

2nd and 3rd generation chips run on a DIFFERENT chipset! HM55 supports best 920/40XM

I cannot see why anybody seems to think it is worth trying to prove otherwise. Save your money and spend it either on one of the above chips or a new laptop. Besides the 920xm isn't a bad chip. It can do better than the 3612qm for instance! :) Once overvolted that is  then you are good to beat even the trusty old 2860qm!

...no don't follow the last bit of advice....

I gave up trying to tell people otherwise, the issue wouldn't rest so until a few people have tried and the results are published. XD

Those people should learn to listen! Why come to a forum to ignore advice given? Baffled!

I saw that the 920xm PDT max is 55W, my current i3 have a PDT 35W.
Is that it does not overheat the components of the laptop?
