    hi everyone:
im posting here a desperate thread in order to fix my laptop and get it working properly again :'(

    here's the deal:
    i have a dell inspiron e1405 which had 80gb hd, 1gb(2x512mb)ram,etc
    i've bought a new 250gb hd and a set of 2gb(2x1gb)gskill ddr2 pc2-5300
ram memory to upgrade it a lil to get some speed. after i received the products from newegg.com i went to test them. tried the first memory and it worked(the laptop booted fine) and the same with the other one, so they are working perfect as well as the hd. BUT i tried to boot it with both memory installed properly on their slots and nothing happened. the laptop starts but doesnt boot. i tried to contact dell's technical support but they said my laptop is already out of warranty so they cannot help me. i've tried everything and no success. btw with one of the older ram sticks(the stocks one) and one of the new ones it boots and works fine but as i already said it doesn't do it with the new ones.

can someone help me with this? :(
i really need to get my laptop back on the game again

thanks to everyone who would like to helo this desperate dude :'(

Is the laptop plugged in? I've heard of a glitch with new hardware on battery power.

Also, it seems like the memory slots and the memory are fine. But, is your new hard drive? Maybe that's causing the issue.

I had this very problem when I tried to install 2x1gb sticks to my old Inspiron laptop.
IIRC, I had to install 1 at a time, boot the laptop up then introduce the other.

I have no idea why and have never heard of it happening before, until now!

i've tried with the laptop plugged in and nothing happens, also when i try to boot it from stick "B" which is the easy-access one, doesnt boot either. and about the hard drive, yea its fine. i tried also with the old one and the same thing happened.

Custom Chris, when i install the first one, it works, and with the computer already running, i install the second one and keep working but doesnt recognize the 2gb, and at the time i restart it i go back to the problem again, the laptop doesnt boot and the Caps Lock and the other led next to it(not the num lock one) start flashing till the computer turns off after a minute or two.

any solutions??? :'( im really dying with this turtle speed on vista

Dude, that is the wrong thing to do. That is an excellent way to kill computer hardware. The proper procedure for doing anything with the hardware is to unplug it and remove the battery. Anything else is unsafe. Trying to do anything with the computer turned on isn't just asking for trouble, it is guaranteeing it.

well....yes you're right. i'm just so desperate to get the 2gb that i just don't know what else i'm gonna do.
i have already tied EVERYTHING and no progress at all. my last choice is to go back to 1gb(2x512mb) or to get a new one, which is kind a hard for me(can't afford it)

Putting in RAM while the computer is already running is asking for trouble plain and simple.
It can easily kill your RAM stick and possibly other hardware.

Turn off the laptop, plug out the battery, then press the power button to get rid of any residual charge.
After that, take out the RAM (gently) and re-plug the first stick.
Plug back the laptop into the power socket (you don't have to re-plug the battery) and run it.
    If it starts, good.
Turn it off, unplug the power cable, then again press the power button to get rid of any residual charge.
Remove the RAM stick and place the other one inside the laptop on the same slot.
Replug the cord (again without the battery) and run it.
Once you've verified that both sticks are still working (on that same slot) ... you repeat the entire process with the second RAM slot.

The reason why you should do all this is to test if the RAM sticks or one of the slots is malfunctioning.

If it turns out one of the slots is at fault, then there's nothing you can do since the laptop is under warranty, and I would suggest remaining with 1GB and selling the other stick on ebay for example (or try to return it to the store where you bought it).

However, if it turns out one of the sticks is to blame, them simply return the RAM to the store where you bought it and ask for a replacement because they sold you a malfunctioning stick.
I think they are supposed to give you a replacement, and you can ask them to test the stick themselves in order to verify it's not working (if it turns out to be the case).

Finally, a little tip for you:
Do not plug in hardware while the hardware is turned on.

It will likely be possible in the future, but right now, you can easily destroy the very hardware you are trying to install.

When I first upgraded my E1505 from 2 x 1Gb to 2 x 2GB, it would do the same thing.
Install both 1Gb modules and power it up. Let it sit for a few minutes. It took my Dell 4-5 minutes to load the BIOS after the memory upgrade occured.
After it loaded, it saw 4Gb of memory without a problem.
I suspect the same will happen with your E1405 seeing 2 x 1GB of memory

As others have pointed out, you do not want to add or remove memory from a system while it is on. Yes you can do it, but it is not good practice unless the memory is on a machine which has hot swappable memory modules.
