Well it depends on what you have in your laptop right now. Most of the time when it comes from the manufacturer you will have 2 So-DIMMS...so your 512MB might be 2x256MB. If that is the case and you upgrade 1 to 512MB you will have a total of 768MB.
Yes RAM only comes in 32,64,128,256,512, 1GB and 2GB sticks. 2GB sticks are uncommon because most computers only support 2GB for now. -
im pretty sure it currently has 2x256mb in there although im hoping its 1x512, ill have to check that.
want to make it upto 1gb in total so if its 2x256mb i guess ill have to get 2 new sticks of 512mb
any remmendations where is best to buy it from? -

Not for the UK...the one I use is www.newegg.com which only ships to the US. I also use www.zipzoomfly.com I think they only ship to the US, but you might want to check that one out.

If you want to make sure what's in your notebook without opening it up, download CPU-Z and run it, it will tell you if one or both slots are filled and how much is in each slot, as well as manufacturer, etc.
Matt
ram recommendations please..
