    i have a compaq laptop...
    MODEL NUMBER V3149AU
    2 YEARS OLD
    it came with 1GB RAM. i.e 2x512MB DDR2 667 modules.
it has only 2 ram slots.
I want to upgrade my memory to a minimum of 2GB.
    can I remove a 512MB module and put 2GB in place?(to give a total of 2.5GB)
    will it work?

i have heard that there could be incompatibilities.
is there a rule like both slots should have same memory installed like 2x512MB OR 2x1GB..
    please advice....

    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

For maximum efficiency and speed, yes you'd want two sticks of the same brand, capacity and speed. But its not going to cripple your system if you don't do so.

So yes you can just get a 2 gig stick, put it in place of one of the 512's, and enjoy having more ram.
