    Hi there,
I don't normally post here, but I've got a question which I thought you'd know an solution for.

I've got some problems with my DVD-burner lately; the laser is hardly working anymore so the shop were I bought it recommend me to insert a new DVD-burner/CD-player, whatever. I've got my eyes on a new DVD-burner now (), but I really dont know if it's easy to replace the old one.

I know my way in a regular computer, but dont think it's wise to screw open my laptop. What do you guys recommend? Is it as easy as removing a screw and removing the old burner, then inserting the new one or will it be more work?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is upgradable. All you have to do is the following:

Make sure that you can remove the benzel on the CD drive first - it should come off. The reason I say this is because sometimes the benzel is specially shaped so it can fit in the laptop correctly - all the drives you buy will have a standard benzel. You may have to swap them.

After you make sure it comes off, also make sure that you can remove the drive. Turn the notebook over, and look under where the optical drive resides. There should be one or two screws; take them out. Then, the drive should slide out.

When you verify that you can do those two things, then you're all clear for an upgrade. Buy the new drive; take out the old one, swap benzels (if necessary), stick in the new one, and Windows will automatically install it on startup.

    Chaz

Ok thank you very much. That did made me order the drive. One little piece of help is still missing; I can't really find a Dutch translation of the word "benzel". I've tried three offline and two online dictionaries..

I think he meant "bezel" or the front faceplate of the drive which in some cases are proprietary. Aftermarket drives come with a standard faceplate which may/may not fit in with the design of the laptop.

NECs are the best laptop drives in my opinion.

    Hi,

I have the same laptop and I actually just installed that same DVD-drive. Although it is not as easy as previously mentioned. There are no two scrwes and slide it out.

It's a bit more dificult but I have put this guide online to replace your vga card. follow these steps to open up your laptop and replace the dvd-drive instead of the cga-card of course :)
