replace dvd/cd drive in Asus W2Jc

I'd like to try to replace the dvd/cd drive in my Asus W2Jc. I know the outside won't fit completely but I'd like to to get the old one out just to see if a new one would fit at all. Now, before I start unscrewing all screws, does anyone know what I need to do to get the drive out?

Well, your not really clear in your post in the how and why.

Basically how unscrew the current one and gently take it out of its bay. Then disconnect all the wires. Connect the wires to the new drive, slide it in to the bay and redo all the screws. Thats all there is to it.

All replacements should fit the same way. It sounds like you already have the new drive, but you should have one thats the same size as the old one? Otherwise its not gonna fit.

 

You need to post this in the ASUS forum. Most ASUS optical drives come with a proprietary adapter attached to the optical drive rails/frame. You will need to unscrew the adapter and the rails from the optical drive. Pretty much all optical drives will fit as it is a standard. I had my crappy TSST replaced with an NEC ND6500A and all you need to do is interchange the W2J bezel at the front of the unit, after the conversion, it will look no different from your previous drive. I chose the 6500A drive simply because it had the most firmware hacks out, as well as media compatibility.

You can purchase any slimline drive from Ebay, and it will work. I recommend NEC as it has the most support out of all the slimline drive manufacturers.

 

OK, thx. I just needed to know if there were any other screws to considder than the ones I see at the bottom of the notebook. I'll have a go with it.

 

There should be only one screw holding in the optical drive. Look for either a latch or a small "CD" indicator beside the screw. Unscrew that and simply pull out the DVD drive, make sure your W2J is off of course.

Then follow my guide above, you'll then know what I'm talking about with the screws /frame rails and adapter.

To test it I replaced the drive with the one from another notebook and all worked well. Unfortunately the original drive is a slot-in drive so I have to do some adjusting to the front of the new drive to actually fit (since there is no BluRay slot-in drive yet).

 

Oh yes there is...Panasonic has them in some of the Dell notebooks.

I don't really need BluRay burning capability, so it's a bit expensive for what I want. Do you know if Panasonic has a slot-in with BluRay-read only? (like the NEC BC-5500A)
