    hi there,

Currently I own an averatec 6100 series notebook and the heat and low battery life is pissing me off. So I am wondering if it is possible to replace the actual Pentium4 w\HT with a centrino or one of those mobile CPU's that drain less power?

    cheers.

Swapping a P4 with a P-M is only possible in a desktop (with a daughter card from some motherboard makers like Asus - and even then it will only work with certain boards). The two chips are not pin compatible. I think the P-M has an extra pin.

You might be able to pop in a P4M if the cpu in your notebook is attached with a socket. It is more common to see the CPU soldered on. The P4M will run cooler and eat less battery, but at the cost of speed (and probably HT).

You might just want to sell your 6100 (there is a buy/sell forum here) and get a Thinkpad. I have seen the R series at very reasonable prices (P-M or C-M) - you can use this site to find hot deals (main page).

In general a 1.86 GHz Dothan P-M will run pretty much any P4 close. You may not even need that much HP.

Yeah - lewdvig is right, a Pentium M will not work with your notebook. Also, a Mobile Pentium 4 won't either if you have the desktop version - it's not supported by the motherboard, unless your model was offered with it....I've never seen a notebook offered with both a Mobile Pentium 4 and a Pentium 4 DTR.

So, you can't upgrade to Pentium M (Centrino isn't a processor, just so you know - it consists of a wireless chip, chipset, and PM CPU ;) )

can u put a P4 on a PM laptop with centrino tech, they both supposedly have a 478 pin, or something like that

No, Its not as simple as just having a matching pin. Processor upgrade also involves BIOS support and also the voltages supported by the motherboard. Also the cooling systems which are designed for the P-M are not capable of taking on the extra heat generated by the Pentium4.

Download a program called CPU-Z. It will tell you your exact CPU. Take a screenshot or post what it says here! ;)
