You may remember a few weeks ago I made a topic about messing up the vbios on the video card in my old notebook. I was able to get a replacement card from ebay, and swap it in, now everything works fine again and my five year old PC lives on.

    I went from a 64MB Geforce 4200 to a 128MB Geforce FX 5650

the best part is now I still can't run any games....

I'm impressed they made a 4 series capable of upgrading to a 5 series card.

And hey, I'm sure your 4200 (and your 5650) runs games better than my Intel GMA 900 :)

The FX 5650 is a little old (3-4 years) this explain your problem with playing games.

I'm not familiar with the D800 but I know very well the D810 and the Precision M70 and I know for sure that both can be upgraded to the Go 7800.

Check the following link it describes the upgrade on a D810.

    what, you upgraded from a 4200 to a 5650?
I know its possible, but I thought the 4200 was more powerful.

I have a dell inspiron 8500, which was basically the first high end dell system, with multimedia and everything. I bought it with the 5650, and I upgraded it to a 4200, and the 4200 ran much better in games.

If my memory serves me right, the fx series were a disaster and even the gf4 ti had no problem besting them.....

The GPU in the D800 is not an MXM format...right?

How about an upgrade to the Radeo 9600 or 9800?

no, it is not mxm. this is way before MXM was ever thought of. About 5 years ago, Dell manufactured only a few series with actual graphics cards. Dell used the same graphics port on most series, so you could swap graphics cards between series.
For example my system was compatible with the ati 9600 pro, 9700, geforce 4200ti, and fx5650. To my recollection, the 8500 was only sold with the geforce 4200 and fx5650, but the other two could be very easily swapped in and used.
I dont think their was a ati radeon 9800 which used the same interface, only the 9600 pro and 9700.

I am glad your graphics upgrade was a success, most people cant upgrade their graphics cards
