    HI,

I'm looking at replacing toshiba portege 2000 hd. This is a very old 1.8" I think it was one of the first 1.8" ever made. The specs of the one have is:

    1.8"
    8 mm hieght.
    IDE
    ATA 5

It aslo says for the connector it uses a MCD-D50 interface connector. I assume its called D50 because it has 50 pins? Does anyone know?

All of the replacement ones I'm seeing are also 1.8", 8mm, but are ATA 6. And they don't say if they are MCD-D50 Connector.

    So questions are:

What is the difference between ATA 5 and ATA 6. And is ATA 6 backward compatible with ATA 5? And are all 1.8" hd's MCD-D50 connector?

    Thanks,

AKA ata66 vs ata100... though I doubt those drives are able to take advantage of the 100 speed.

What is your existing HDD model number?

This UK site has an excellent listing of 1.8" HDDs and notes the different interface types.
