I just now physically inserted a replacement HD into my HP laptop, I understand the new HD needs formatted but not sure how to proceed, and then use the restore disk, I was hoping the good folks here could advise me. Do I simply start up with the restore disk in the drive? I don't care about transferring old info so we can let that go. he old drive is crashed and there really wasn't anything on it that I can't reinstall.

Pretty much, yes. Whatever OS you're planning on installing it (should) automatically re-format your new hard drive in order to prepare it for the installation of the OS using your restore disk.
