Hi - did anybody here recently bought a c2d T9600 retail? if so I was wandering if you can tell me what steping and spec do they have; Intel lists at list two specs - SLG9F, SLB47 and stepings E0 and C0 under the same retail box number.
Thanks,
Cosmin

Have a look here, towards the bottom of the list, different ordering code.

What is a processor core stepping?
Solution:
The first version of a new microprocessor product is the A-0 core step. Later, as improvements are made to the product for functional fixes or manufacturing improvements, the core stepping number is incremented. Generally speaking, minor changes result in an increased number (i.e. A-3 to A-4), while more complex changes result in the letter being changed (i.e. A-3 to B-0). Note that a B-0 core stepping is more recent than an A-4 core stepping.

Hi Tinderbox - AW80576GH0726M is the same for both SLG9F and SLB47, when you go to SLGEM and SLB43 you see a different code - , and also the retail box does not even specify any of those numbers, all the places just list BX80576T9600 as the box number ....

It`s either a mistake or they don't consider the difference relivent.
-
yes, I hope so, also I consider this my second choice after P9700, just that I am not sure if that is recognized by my manufacturer Bios - lenovo T400.....

I don't see why not virtually the same except the TDP

yes I was thinking so, just that I remembered reading somewhere that you need to have the CPU id string in Bios for it to work properly....

You got me on that one, see if anybody more knowledgeable show up

Thanks, Tiderbox, I hope I can use the P9700...
Cosmin -
You can use the T9600 friend! P9700 is different power so watch out!!
-
The P9700 draws less power, so if it can handle a T-series, it can handle P.

True. Do as he says then. But don't say I didnt give you a pointer! Don't forget you may void your warrenty!

He thinks you have an P9700 25w and are changing to an T9600 35w and your cooling system might not be able to handle the extra heat.
Who would go from an P9700 to an T9600 is another question, but that is the only reason i can think off for his warning. -
Hi Guys - the power shouldn't be a problem, the same system can handle the T9600, so it can handle the P9700; but the more I search about this it seems that even if the platform - Montevina in this case - can work with both processors, the laptop manufacturer has to include the CPU in Bios otherwise it won't work.

You could check the notebook manufacturer's support site, and see if there is any recent BIOS update and BIOS update history available. In the history, you can check if any of the enhancements include the support for newer CPUs.
It should work just fine, since they are based on the same core, and are for the same platform. There is always a risk of voiding the warranty when upgrading hardware such as CPU and GPU, so consider that before upgrading. The P9700 does have a lower TDP, but you can reduce the TDP of the T9600 by a good 10W through proper undervolting. -
Miner - I was thinking the same but I want to be sure before spending the money as most places just let you replace with same item in case of DOA, no returns...
Andy - that's first thing I did, but they don't list the newer supported CPus -I was expecting this from using MSI or Asus boards for dektops in the past, also the TDP is just part of it, I was thinking that the P9700 is a bit newer design than the T9600..
