Hi all, hoping for some advise, about to buy a sager np 8170, wondering if I should reuse my current 80gb Intel g2 or just buy a g3 120gb.
Will have 2nd drive in notebook so extra storage moot.
Have had g2 15 months and reinstated Windows twice. Been running trim.
SATA 3 for np8170?
obviously saving 300 will be nice to add to better screen etc.

tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Get the better screen, use the G2 and get a 'better' SSD in a few months if you still think you need it.
-
Seconded, use the G2. Save your money for something else.
-
Thanks guys. G2 stays. Just needed that voice of reason to confirm.
-
You came to the WRONG place for that!
-
Hah. Anand says that the days of massive price drops for SSDs are over. So instead of 50% in a year, we're in for 20% yearly drops. The new 25nm is just starting to flood the marrket. Ppl need to deal with Japan too. I bet Christmas time will be a good time for SATA 3. It'll be enough time for the new chips to be in full supply and prices should decrease more slowly afterward.
In other words, use the g2 until black Friday. -
Yeah, I'm sticking with G2 until something really revolutionary comes out or mine dies.
-
What if you were buying an SSD for the first time. G2 or G3?
-
Technological improvements seem to be hitting a wall too. Whereas every previous generation of SSDs essentially doubled performance in every aspect, the latest generation only doubles sequential performance - all other areas either got a small increase, or in the case of the Intel 510 and Crucial m4, took a performance hit compared to the products they're replacing.
-
Depends on the prices and prices of competing products like C300 and Samsung 470.
For example, if G3 and C300 are the same price I'd always take C300. -
From the way I understand it, Moore's Law is still in full effect and we're still achieving double productivity every 18 months. However, with SSDs, increased yields are concomitant with introducing fresh new problems. So, it's more like two steps forward and one step back, I think. The big problem being more errors and the corrective measures resulting in increased overhead.

I have the option of the Intel 320 (80GB) or the Intel 510 (120GB), or I can get something else myself. Suggestions?
-
For SATA II or III?
-
I will have the ability for Sata 3.
-
C300 or Intel 520 if reliability is priority.
Vertex 3 if speed is priority. (power consumption is relatively high) -
On Xotic PC's site (where I ordered from), I only had the option for Intel SSDs. I was down to the 80GB 320 (Sata 2, of course), and the 120GB 510 (Sata 3). I saved over $100 by picking the 320, but I still have at least a week to change if I want to. I kind of wanted my laptop to come with a SSD installed so I don't have to do it myself, but if it's worth it, I might buy one from somewhere else.

That's a good, succinct way of thinking about things. Although, the new Intel isn't necessarily proven reliable just yet, despite them having the best track record of all manufacturers.
reuse g2 or go g3 for new notebook?
