recently I bought the logitech z680 5.1 speakers for my lenovo T61. Obviously, lenovo did not put three required jacks for the rear speakers. Then recently a friend brought up the fact that current motherboards usually support s/pdif protocols, and my speaker console has a jack for the s/pdif cable. After a quick search, product descriptions of the T61 and Advanced mini dock for IBMs support s/pdif. My friend told me to just plug it into to headphone jack and it should work.
I've only seen pictures of these cables, for I have not had time to go get one yet. I was wondering if this is right, and if this cable is capable to carry a 5.1 signal to the speakers. thanks all.

My laptop has n s/pdif "jack" that dubs as the headphone port. You have to buy a little adapter for like a buck that converts 3.5mm stereo into an s/pdif input port. I bought one and it works great! I cant remember the website so i cant send you an actual link. When I get home from work I'll post up a picture of the adapter.
It's one of these
