Hi guys, I ordered my lenovo T430 a while ago which hasn't arrived yet, but I'm thinking about buying an SSD for it.

I know that samsung 830 and crucial m4 are really popular here but I've been told that Crucial M4 can have compatibility issues.

Can you guys recommend me a good 128gb ssd?
Samsung 830 or Crucial or Plextor? or are there any others?

Lastly, 128 Gb would be enough right? (i've never had an SSD)

Depends how much space you usually use on your computer.

Regarding the space requirement you have to decide, as for the brand I would go for Samsung.

If the price is right, i have yet to find a decently priced 830 in Canada, Tigerdirect are the only i've seen carrying it and they still charge 275$ for it while the M4 goes on sale for around 200$. With that kind of price difference, the M4 is a no brainer if you want to save some money. In the US though, the price difference is smaller so getting the samsung for it's software and faster speed is worth it.

I own one of each (830/m4 128GB & Plextor m3 256GB) and 830 = M3 > m4, but you really won't notice any real time difference. The m4 tends to go on sale more/sell for less, but the 830 was $90 last week and the M3 was $100 a few days before that.

I would compare this to " Do you like pie, cake or cookies". Meaning, from everything I have read and seen, all are very good. And in most real world usage, you won't notice any real difference. So as said earlier, you might as well use price as your deciding factor. However, if they are very close in price, then go for the Sammy. It has it's toolbox software to help keep it performing to it's best ability. But if there is a clear price difference, save the money.

    The M4 is cheaper

The 830 is told to be safer

Crucial and samsung are both fast to fix any issues that may arise with FW updates. Crucial got one major issue with the 5000h bug fixed by FW0309. Samsung never got any such issues. As far as i know, it's the only reason why people say the 830 is safer, but consider that the bug was fixed shortly after it was found by Crucial and they showed that they stood behind their products.

The loose points for having an issue like that, but gained some for the fast fix unlike some other companies *cough SandForce & OCZ couch*

In the end, both are very reliable drives and one of the few alternatives to SandForce that has proven to be reliable. Newer drives like the Vertex 4 are too young to be in the reliable category imo, but things are looking all right so far for those too.

Been doing research to embrace my very first SSD......My impression is that Crucial SSDs are getting too many firmware updates. That, to me, means I will get an imperfect piece of hardware to begin with - not kinda my idea of "mass-marketed" hardware.

This is a terrible assumption to go on. Many first generation SandForce drives haven't received a single firmware update, but you could hardly call them "more perfect" than the Crucial M4.

My vote is for the Samsung 830/470.

It is 99.9% fail-proof, trouble-free, reliable, trustworthy, proved, reputable, tried-and-true, unfailing, compatible, consistent, dependable, stable, safe and well-built.

    I've never owned a Crucial M4.
