which would you pick and why? i have 3 notebooks here that need upgraded drives for my office i figure its about time since these are almost full. both of these drives have awesome deals right now with the samsung only about 10$ more.

from performance reviews it seems the samsung is def faster than the newer hitachi (tomshardware) but i have little experience with sammy drives excpet one the died to soon on me. though samsung was great and sent me a new one with a return label for the old one!!

so if you were buying today which would you get and why? thanks

I would go with the Samsung drive if I were you... I have had nothing but great experiences with Samsung and like you said, if there is anything wrong with any of their drives they will back them until the bitter end. :)

Hope this helps, and enjoy your new found space!

I think that the Hitachi is better than the Samsung for a few reasons:
    1. 3.0Gb/s SATA (vs. 1.5Gb/s)
    2. 3 Year warranty on the Hitachi
    3. $99 after MIR @ Newegg.com

Have you considered the WD Scorpio 320GB at all? It has all the goodness of the Hitachi, but with a much lower Avg. Latency than both the Sammy and the Hitachi.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&SpeTabStoreType=&Order=BESTMATCH&srchInDesc=

Good luck finding your next hard drive.

I don't have any experience with Hitachi drives. But the Samsung Spinpoint that I have in my desktop has been going strong for 4 years now with absolutely no problems.

im just torn between spending a bit more for wd 320gb drives as they are the fastest 320gb out right now. but do i want to spend about 30$ more for a little bit of gain.. the samsung drive according to toms is supposed to be pretty fast but just not overall as fast as the wd 320. i can get the sammy for 95$ also..

according to all the reviews i have read there is not need for 3.0gb sata2 the 1.5gb drives perform just as well and even better in some cases..

I never had any problems with any Samsung drives.I think they are the most reliable and they do have a lot of features too.

What do you want in a hard drive? If you don't require the speed of say an SSD or 320GB 7200RPM drive, then any 320GB 5400RPM should do. The differences are negligible.

Yeah zfactor, I have had nothing but PROBLEMS with WD's HDDs. I would definitely recommend any other company than them. They in my experience have had a high failure within a year % with me...

Just my $0.02, but I hate for anyone else to go through all of the crap I have had to put up with WD...

I have 2 Hitachi drives in my laptop and they are excellent. They are 7K160 drives (have 2) with 16MB cache and I have never had a single problem with them. I'm pretty sure that all 3 manufacturers are good. I only have real experience with WD drives as I have a few of them that are 6+ years old (one is in my sig desktop) and none of them have died.

well i want dependability first of course, speed second, and quiet third, price is last..

the hitachi is 95$ after rebate, the sammy is 95$ with no rebate, the wd the cheapest i can find from a reliable vendor is about 125$ all have free shipping.

the best overall review i could find shows the wd basically the fastest of them all in 320gb

the sammy has very mixed results. in some tests it is better than the wd drive but in others is performed below the average of even the slower drives. the hitachi didnt excel in any one area. it was pretty much average all the way around not really bad in any test but not the best in any either.

ive personally had some issues with the hitachi desktop drives so i have always stayed away. wd and seagate have always been my go to drives. i wish seagate had a 320gb out.

Remember, if companies have consistent problems, they wouldn't be in business still. Majority of hard drives are pretty dependable. Although you put price last, I assume you still have a budget and/or hard drive size constraint or else you would go for a SLC SSD - more dependable, faster, and quieter than any hard drive out there. Maybe get one of each and test them in all 3 computers and see how that works out :p

I just bought the 5k320, should have it in a few days. I chose it over the others because from what I could find, it seems to be the quietest of the bunch, with very good performance. I've had good experiences with Hitachi notebook drives in the past, so it was my top pick.

I have no experience with hitachi drives but I know a few of us who've had problems with samsung hdd's (see thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=198016) Personally I'm on my second Samsung HM320JI and having problem with loud click noises and "beeps". The first one had the same problems and died unexpectedly. I liked the performance though, but if you intend to use your hdd for a longer time than 3 months I suggest you go for the hitachi.

How is that an advantage? none of these drives can even max out the bandwidth of a SATA I port.
btw glad u liked ur wd. A very good hd IMO.

I would go for the samsung hm320, it is a really nice drive, and it is really quiet. I cant hear any beeps or clicks as many have noticed. I guess my ears arent that good, but the drive is fast and power efficient. I usually vote Hitachi, but Samsung electronics is quickly moving up in the harddrive section.

Yours probably just doesn't have the clicks or your laptop absorbs them.

A Fujitsu drive of mine sometimes gets the clicks, and I bet you would hear them.

OK, I've got my Hitachi 5k320 installed, and I must say it's one of the quietest, if not the quietest drive I've ever used. It has low CPU utilization, and low power consumption; a really great drive all around. Much better than the Seagate 5400.4 which this unit replaced.
