hi, i have an hp dv4-1155se, my hd its 320gb, sata 2, toshiba
the problem its, my hd its always hot, has a hot temperature, bettwen 45 and 52ºc, i thinks its a lot, for example, if i tocuh on my left side of the touchpad, always its hot, and sometimes the touchpad its warm, if i change the hd, can i fix this?
i think the model of my hd its not very good
i would like to buy an hd 500gb, for example this
    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-WD-500GB-Hard-Drive-Laptop-2-5-WD5000BEVT-SATA-500_W0QQitemZ220406651209QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Drives_Storage_Internal?hash=item3351429949&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

I would recommend the Hitachi 5K500.B, which has lower power consumption than the WD5000BEVT and similar performance. I have both HDDs and measured the 5K500.B at 2.3W and the WD5000BEVT at 2.6W (maximum during benchmarking). NBR also has a review.

However, either would be an improvement on the Toshiba which tend to have above-average power consumption. If your HDD is the Toshiba MK3252GSX then Tom's Hardware measured the maximum power consumption at 3.4W.

Note that the 5K500.B should not be confused with the previous 5K500 which is last year's model. 1/2" thick with 3 platters.

The Hitachi 5K500.B should run cooler than the WD5000BEVT because of its lower power usage. It is a very efficient drive with solid performance and reliability.
Performance between the 5K500.B and the WD5000BEVT will be very minimal in real life applications.

I would get the 5K500.B to have the cooler running temperatures and the extra battery life the more power efficient drive will yield.

in my opinion, stay away from every brand platter drive execpt seagate. and maybe WD. I have used all in the past and only seagate never let me down...I would steer well clear of Hitachi, and toshiba drives...have many of those die..

spend a little more and get a seagate. Im talking from my experince with building computers for the past 15 years. not just reveiws read on the net.

    good luck!

Everyone will have their opinions. I have never had a Hitachi drive fail me. Seagate and Western Digital though, more of them have died than I have fingers and toes. Seagate's current mobile and desktop drives have been pretty flaky. I would steer clear from them, as they have the worst reliability as of late

The laws of physics dictate that power gets converted to heat, so less power = cooler, so the Hitachi wins in that respect. And, the cooler the HDD runs, the less likely it is to die.

That temperature doesn't really mean anything if there are no reference (ambient and idle) temperatures to compare.

    27C does seem low
My 7K320 usually hovers around 38-40C It never really goes higher than 44C
It runs much cooler than the 5400.6 seagate I used to have. That uses to idle at 46C and run up to 50C after extended use

I don't know how the Hitachi 500gb compares to the WD but I notice occasional click sounds from my hitachi... I think it may be the heads parking or something to save power... otherwise its quite quiet.

BTW my hitachi 160gb failed without warning, most likely its the controller board... so I have slight hesitations about hitachi but at the same time I got a hitachi as a replacements so *shrug*

About the heat, I don't know about your DV4 but on my DV2700, the palmrest where the hard drive is located gets hot even without a hard drive so either way my hard drive has a extra source of heat. But I think it is slightly cooler than my last drive.

I've got both and the Hitachi uses slightly less power, so it is the better choice if less heat and better battery life are objectives. However, the WD isn't as hot as most of the previous generation of HDDs.

And you can also study the Tom's Hardware 2009 2.5" HDD charts. For example, this.
