I don't know if it's just a windows driver problems or what, but my sata drive runs at 50C while the ide runs at 43C.
Do sata drives have those advanced power management options too? This is kind of worrisome.

It depends very much on the notebook & it's heat-handling characteristics. I would not worry TOO much about a 49C temp..Which two notebooks are you comparing?
-
I wouldn't worry at all about 50C. My HDD usually runs at 60C on average. It really depends on the overall efficiency of the cooling system. What speed are HDDs? If one runs at a higher rpm rating that the other, one might be slightly hotter.

Those temperatures are very similar to what I have, they are not bad. A cooling pad can help immensely with hard drive temperatures; what laptop are you using as posted? Take look at the cooling guide.

As several people have already pointed out, a 7C difference is negligable... easily attributed to differences in notebook and/or HDD models.
Mechanically speaking, SATA and IDE are identical.
