The screen is always off? Even during the bios post?

Check if the back light is the problem. If it is the screen will be very dark but if you look hard you will see the picture on the screen.

What do you hear? No warning beeps or others? Does windows start?

Since you just got it I would send it straight back and report it was dead on arrival.

Yeah, don't send it in for repairs - simply return it.

Buy it new again (on a new/separate invoice).

This could be the case where this gets fixed and then doesn't even hiccup for the next ten years, or it could be a sign of what to expect from this specific system. Don't wait to find out which one it is.

    Good luck.

even the BIOS does not show up. I tried the brightness keys.
Sorry for the confusion but I meant that I bought this used from a NRB member so I can't return it/get it for repairs

First off, did you just buy this from a NBR member? and did you just get it, and the first time you powered it on did it not work? did it ever work for you? and did they claim that it was all functioning?

It could be [don't know how likely] that the back lighting is broken, or that a cable is loose/ dislodged for the screen/ back lighting. If it is that, then you will have to open it up and check for yourself

To see if the screen is working at all, power the laptop on, give it ~1 min, and shine a flashlight on the screen (move the flashlight around and shine light from different angles) you might see a very faint image being displayed; if this is the case, then it is a back lighting problem (back lighting power board, or a loose cable)

SOL usually means "Sorry Out of Luck"

I just got it from a NBR member and the first time I turned it on it did not work. i'm sure he said it worked, as he installed vista on it the day before he shipped it

I think the problem is not with the screen but maybe the video card since the external monitor connected via HDMI showed no signal.

Well I would ask the seller for a refund. Did you pay with PayPal?

We traded laptops. He received mine before I did and he said it was working fine. I really want to keep this laptop so fixing it would be best, but if not I'd probably ask him to exchange again.

Well if you don't have get external signal that means either the GPU or motherboard or RAM is bad, and you won't be able to troubleshoot without replacing parts.

I would contact the seller right off the bat telling them it isn't working (don't go demanding anything like a refund, or anything right away, just make him aware of the situation, and ask if anything like this has ever happened before and if there is a way they know of to fix it)

Then (if it were me) I would open up the display housing (by removing the bezel) and check that the cables are all in place and everything is good; then if it wasn't that I would open up the lower half of the laptop and check if there was a loose display cable there (it is a cable that runs from right near the hinge, up to the screen through the hinge).

If the cables are all good then I would tell the seller that you checked for loose cabling, but found nothing wrong, and ask to "un-do" your trade (be very polite, and ask for the seller's help in solving the issue)
