Ok, so I'm thinking about getting a Sony E series notebook. My choices are quite limited - I'm looking for a 17"+ laptop, and it (or at least its keyboard) must be white - and the E series fits this apparently short bill.

Problem? It's a consumer laptop, and kinda lowish-end. I have a business class Fujitsu now (which is dying) and I'm not so sure I'd be up to looking at a screen with low brightness and horrible contrast ratio, especially since I use it to watch TV, and TV shows like to have scenes in the darkness - so with a low contrast ratio, everything will look exactly the same and I'll essentially be listening to the show. The model they tested in the review is 15.5", not 17" like I'd be buying, but I assume that it has the same problems. Anyway, my question, is it possible to buy a screen that's made for some other, super-amazing laptop model, and stick it into the E series? And then, would it be possible to stick the Sony E screen into my Fujitsu N6210? My current screen is dying line-by-line, and I'd like to take the laptop and bring it to my university to leave there. I can do it as-is, but, it would just be nice.

Anyway, so, is this possible, and if so, what 17" screen can anyone recommend?

P.S. It would be a lot easier if I could just swap the keyboard from EC or F series for something non-black, since I'd really prefer the EC or F, but I can't find any such option...

i dont think the screens have the same ratio

    16 10 and 16 9

    led back light.... etc

in short no you cant do it.

if you could find a better screen you could replace the one in the sony.

Im not personally sure it is of bad quality though do you have a review of it?

they are describing the 15 inch low res screen there in that article find one that talks about the 17 inch wuxga screen

Yes, 15" laptops are likely to have much cheaper screens than 17".

You can find other screens to put in that sony but its not easy to know if they will work or not. In the past sony has used 1 brand exclusively for all their screens.

Although come to think of it now that they are LED this may have changed. stamar was the one who told me hitachi used to make all sony screens, and I dont think they make LED screens so maybe sony has been forced into standardization.

If you get the WUXGA and you hate it, I have a screen laying around you could try out, it was from an Asus g73 and apparently the better AOU model.

BTW I though the colored sony keyboards were just skins they sold them with? :p

no hitachi doesnt make all sony screens

most sony screens are actually branded sony regardless of who orignally made them.

Sonys largest lcd partner is samsung.

the wuxga screen in a sony ec is probably compatible with the one in the asus g73

Im not sure if its better or worse actually. Some owner somewhere should know.

the low end 15 inch sony screen they described there has 190 nits brightness.

my 1600 x 900 lg screen has 220 nits brightness

but the g73 screen has 300 nits brightness. I BET the sony is exactly the same....
