any idea when an update to the momentus XT is due? would be nice to see them up the solid state portion and sort out all the minor issues that the original one had.

I'd love to see a 16gb SSD version of this drive.

16GB would push the price limit way too far. 8GB SLC would be a good sweet spot.

Oh. I wish Seagate would update soon. Or else I would be forced to buy the old one.

16gb is pretty cheap nowadays, its the 32gb and above that seem to start costing more.

MLC yes, but SLC is still considerably more.

HDD revisions etc seem to come out sporatically. it can go sometimes 2-3 years between upgrades. Hopefully it will not be that long though.

My hope would be to see the 750GB platter and 2 of the 25nm 8GB slc chips when they are available for 16 GB. since the 25nm chips are most likely slower 2 channel should hopefully make up for the speed as they are single 4GB chips now.

im afraid they will not upgrade it soon, because they have no need to....they're the fastest traditional drive, and ssd's are still way too expensive to be big competition....and most importantly.....no one else has a hybrid drive on the market :(

    not good for the consumer....

true. and although i dont have stats to back it up, it does seem like the xt was a very good selling drive. they would just cannibalize theyre own product so to speak.
im also a little perplexed why the other manufactiurers have not gone hybrid themselves. it just seems like the most logical evolution to the hdd.

They could upgrade it but probably to 640/750GB sizes, not anything with the cache. Like you said, there's no competition for the cache, but people who want larger sizes might look elsewhere.

zm68 hitting laptops will basically kill the hybrid

I don't think all laptops would use zm68 so there will still be a market for hybrid. That is assuming the market really want hybrid. What seems to be happening is that the bulk movers don't want hybrid as a standard configuration(could be cost issue or haven't through the qualifing process) and for the really 'high end' target, an SSD seems to be what those markets are looking for.

I thought there was no Z68 equivalent for laptops and that this was only for desktops since the current chipsets only allowed overclocking or use of the integrated graphics but not both (while laptops only let you use the integrated graphics).

    What's zm68?
All I know I've bought a Momentus XT, because a SSD in space/price was simply not an option. I'm able to get a little of that ssd like performance, on my favorite apps. 8gb would be much better though I agree. I probably won't buy a 2nd gen, but if ssd prices stay high I can see buying a 3rd or 4th gen if my experience with this one works out well.

could be true. a hybrid eats at both the market share of traditional hdd's and ssd's alike so manufacturers are not supporting it.

I don't think Seagate will make a 750GB Momentus XT.. wait for 1TB 7200RPM laptop drives to come to market. Then maybe a Momentus XT will come out.

Maybe as soon as 6 months from now

I'm really looking forward to seeing something upgraded, it would suck if they just pretty much fixed the errors with the current drive and just sold that again. I'm hoping they will give us more cache as opposed to increasing their drive size to 750GB. Perhaps they'll do both and release the 750GB w/more cache as opposed to the 500GB model. The Hybrid Drive definitely has it's uses but I hope they don't over price the stuff otherwise people would be better off with an SSD
