    sharing internet connection between desktop/notebook?

    Hi I am completely new to networking and do not know what I should research into, hubs or routers? etc... My desktop is the one connected to the internet through a usb modem that picks up wireless internet(So I cannot just have a router connected to the modem, because theres no ethernet interface on the modem)I would like to completely protect my new notebook from the internet so I was thinking putting a firewall router between my desktop and my notebook?? So the setup would be (usb modem -> desktop -> router -> notebook) would this be possible? Anyway just looking for some advice on some hardware I should look at and the cableing I'll need. This network does not have to do anything else other then connecting the notebook to the internet(no file sharing capabilities etc.. are needed) Thanks

    You will have a hard time setting this up. You can use Windows Connection sharing to get the basic setup. A router firewall will not protect you if you set it up between the desktop and notebook. A router firewall would only filter incoming traffic but since the desktop and notebook are both internal it wont help. A router will be totally useless because a router would only work it the modem is connected to it and not to the desktop. With your planned setup the router wont have anything to route.

    You cant replace the modem with a modem with an ethernet work or even wireless? It would make things alot easier.

    The alternative (but its a bad one) is to connect the usb modem to the desktop and the notebook to the desktops network port. Then set up windows connection sharing. Then the desktop acts as a gateway and needs to be on whenever the notebook wants to use the net. Also you might run into problems with programs that need ports to be open and so on.

    what sort of connection are you sharing out? is it sort of like the wireless provided by the cell phone companies?
    what you want to do is possible, but as wave said you wouldn't really be getting any benefit security wise, could you not just hook with USB modem to your laptop when you want to use it?
