With a delid tool is much easier than that, and Linus as free CPU's so he can do crap like that to get views, I wouldn't take in consideration anything that Linus does..

I did with my 4790K in my P770ZM. Had to to get decent temps. Rockit88 and delid die mates are great tools. I used a razor on mine, but the tools are safer and easier.

Last delid I did, I damaged the CPU. It seemed like a clean delid, but after I reassembled, it was behaving very strangely and had to trash the CPU. Delidding, while it can benefit from cooler temps, also you take a risk of damaging the CPU in the process. It's not all rainbows and unicorns like people make it out to be. Just have cash on hand to pony up for a second CPU.

The difference is probably closer to 10-20C if you use a liquid metal TIM. Using a traditional paste will probably get you minimal gains.

As everything, care and patience are a virtue, I'm currently running CLU in all my laptops with no problems(with bga,rPGA and mxm, various laptops, ranging from an i7-2670/630m to a 980m/4700hq).
A delid with a delid tool that you can print/order from shapeways for example is much safer than a razor, both for you and for your die.

20c lower, a delid is absolutely necessary with desktop cpu in a laptop

ya 20c lower is definitely worth it, and its only a hundred bucks to have HIDevolution delid it for me and then its still under warranty.

Depends on the heatsink and how much lower the IHS sits after a delid. If it drops 0.5mm - 1.0mm (or more) you will have not gained much because that gap will have to be filled with thermal paste. I'm playing devil's advocate here. Just it isn't something for someone to do that's on a budget, because risk is definitely there. I know it has benefits but I've heard of a lot of failures as well.

Even with a ****ty ihs when I got my system I gained about 15 c

For others.. please don't don't do it the way Linus did. You need a very thin razor blade and patience.
Or get a de lid tool.

How long is the delid process? Meaning from the time you turn off the laptop, remove the back cover, go through the rest of delid / relid process, to the time you are booting back up.

Just be patient. And use a thin blade.
Always go parallel to the PCB.
Watch as many videos as you can. Will give you a very good idea of how to go about it.
Or easiest way is to get the Rockit delid tool.

I bought the Rockit delid/relid tool, Articlean cleanup kit, GELID & Kryonaut, and Loctite superglue.

I paid HID to do my delid and do not regret it, that being said, if I wasn't so lazy and didn't have very high trust in HID I would have done it myself. No idea of the exact difference but I see folks complaining about heat and mine appears to peak a dozen or so degrees below theirs.

I am super happy with mine and would not trade the delid for anything. Makes overclocking easy and if I chose to run stock for whatever reason (lol) it would run super cool.

    Sounds good!
But i would suggest not sealing the IHS back on. Because sometimes, the silicon glue might cause a gap or might not be as even as it would be otherwise.

I love it. It was a lot cheaper than the other brands, will get Prema bios when ready, and with delid and CLU and ICD I didn't have to mess with it at all. I installed my drives and was up and running.

Delid shows as it runs much cooler than others I see. Even overclocked it peaks in low 70s for me. Absolutely awesome. HID has my business ( and trust) for my next laptop as well.

I went with the Evoc P870DM3, 6700K and 1080SLI, I ordered early/mid Dec with rush and faster delivery I got it the Friday I had off before Christmas. Yes I worked with @Donald@HIDevolution, he helped me through the whole process. Awesome machine, awesome experience.
