I currently own a E1705 with a sigmatel chip and Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition and will this support 5.1 surround sound? I was planning on buying a logitech z5500 but will my sound card support the full 5.1 sound experience? Any ideas?

Also is the z5500 a good investment? I want a reliable, long lasting, and superior sounding system. Thanks

i've always wondered what "Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition" meant. I'm assuming it refers to software that will supposedly "enhance" your audio, but physically adds nothing to your laptop? sounded like a rip off to me...

In the Sound/Play Back, you can configure your speakers set up to be 2, 4, or 5.1. To set up 5.1 speaker, go to Control Panel/SigmaTel Audio and choose appropriate settings for the 3 miniplug ports.

Apparently, the software works with any sound chip. You could install it on a realtek or soundmax based computer and it would still do exactly the same thing.

Problem is being able to find the software.

Apparently only the Sigmatel has the processing power to back up the software to not cause a huge hit to the CPU. But since I've never seen it installed on anything but Sigmatel so I can't tell if there's truth to it.

You can get 5.1 and you don't need the Audigy software to do it.

Just goto the sigmatel Audio thing in your control panel and tell it what you plugged into each jack. It should even pop up and ask what your plugging in when you start plugging the speakers in & it will configure automatically
