can I update to firmware of the different model?
    which would you recommend?

I ask because on 8x it takes 13min to burn on verbatim -r 16x

This is normal. Laptop drives are not as fast as their desktop counterparts. They are designed with size and power consumption in mind. Desktop drives burn a much larger portion of of the disc at 8x hence the faster burn times. If you are looking for something faster, my NEC 6500 can burn a Taiyo Yuden DVD+R disc in about 10.5 mintues for a full disc. It is the fastest laptop burner I have seen. I would assume the 6670, the latest model, would be the same. Good Luck.
