I have a smartcard reader in my d620. What practical ways can I use this?

The only real use I've seen for them: boot up without a card in it, and the computer will not boot. Security.

Yep, they are more for authentication. I think it's not really a practical thing for the typical user, more important for business or government organizations.

    Smart card

It's not the same thing as a flash drive. If it even has volatile memory, it's not meant for that kind of thing.
