    my laptop was run over (see sig) and I need a wayto test the hardware... I have it hooked up to an external monitor right now.

    Does it boot? I mean many things don't work halfway. Not sure what you are really looking for.

    if you download the ultimate bootdisk, it is a package that contains quite a few diagnostic tools.

    That's the problem with Software testers, the machine has to be somewhat running or what's the point ;)

    FWIW, your Dell may have the built in hardware test routines that you enable at start up, search for the key combination. Mine is enabled when starting the laptop by holding down the powerbutton and the FN key.

    Not sure if HP/Compaq has this built in.
