Samozen, I'd get the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB. Best performance you can get besides buying an SSD.

i have one more question:does my notebook support SATA 2 ??cause my original HD is SATA 1,how to know if my system is SATA 2 compatibil??
thanks
Samo -
Your chipset is the PM965 Santa Rosa will support SATA2, all Intel chipsets core the Core Duo and up support SATA2/300. I'm surprised it came with a SATA1 drive if that indeed is the case.
-
If Your going with a disk drive update I recommend WD Scorpio Black or Seagate Momentus 7200.4, Both SATA 300. I just sold my Seagate Momentus 7200.4, 320gb,16mb cache,SATA 300,1yr. old, very nice drive, very fast, i sold it in one day-actually a few hours,,lol
Cheers

There is plenty of user experience in this thread.
You can also run a search within a thread.

Sometimes updating Seagate firmware will make it quieter. There's a chance it might brick your drive, so back up your data accordingly!
-
i run the update program from seagate but it gives me that i have the last firmware
-
Tsunade_Hime:
do you have vibration with yours Scorpio Blue 640 GB -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Hrm...well maybe just gotta tough it out and wait for another firmware update.
No vibrations from my Scorpio Blue 640 in my D620, and it's silent too.. -
is it 7200 or 5400 rpm?
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Scorpio Blue are 5400 rpm drives.
-
i think that 7200 maybe have a more vibration than 5400 on the same model.is that logical maybe for the extra speed?on the seagate site the 7200.4 specification has the same as 5400 but difference is on rotation and buffer..
-
Seagate has also been known to have some QA issues with their drives; you may just have a drive that isn't quite properly balanced, causing the extra vibration.
-
do you think that westran digital are better than seagate,i mean black scorpio..
-
Performance-wise, yes, although the differences won't be highly noticeable. Some Scorpio Blacks have been known to have some extra vibration too, although it seems to be generally a little less than the Momentus.

Would you be so kind to provide a tip regarding an HDD upgrade in SONY VAIO VGN-AR71M?
I would like to upgrade the HDD which currently is 320 GB on Serial ATA, with a new 2 TB ( Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS)
My question is:
Is the new 2 TB HDD compatible with my Sony Vaio VGN-AR71M? If not, would you be so kind to provide a compatible one, please?
Note: I could not find anywhere what size has the current 320 GB HDD of VGN-AR71M...
The Product Features and Technical Details of the 2TB HDD are as follows:
Technical Details
Brand Name: Western Digital
Model: WD20EARS
Hardware Platform: PC, Mac
Form Factor: 3.5" x 1/3H
Hard Disk Size: 2 TB
Hard Disk Description: Internal hard drive
Warranty: 3 years warranty
Hard Disk Interface: Serial ATA-300
Hard Disk Rotational Speed: 5400.0 RPM
Buffer Size: 64 MB
Width: 4 inches
Depth: 5.8 inches
Height: 1 inches
Weight: 1.6 pounds
I thank you in advance for your understanding, time and support.
-
No, it is not at all compatible. The WD20EARS is a _desktop_ 3.5" drive. It's much too large for your notebook. You need a 2.5" drive, most likely a 2.5" 9.5mm drive (your notebook may be able to take a 12.5mm drive, but it's unlikely). To this end, the largest capacity drive you can buy at the moment is a 750 GB drive.

seagate 7200.4 is known to vibrate quite a bit. I've had a Western Digital Scorpio Black, and Hitachi 7k500. Both are 500GB, 7200RPM, 16mb Cache.
The Hitachi has no vibration, and sounds exactly like the original 5400RPM drive, the Scorpio Black is quiet, but does vibrate a tiny bit. I would suggest returning the Seagate 7200.4 and getting the Hitachi 7k500 or Western Digital Scorpio Black.
