I am not exactly a computer technician and by no means do i know much about the internal components etc.. however i researched some and feel pretty confident i can accomplish what i want to do. this evening i dropped my laptop and now the computer screen is white with lines going across the screen and up. i know there is no other damage because i plugged in an old monitor i had from back in the day and im actually using that set up right now to write this and research. i have another laptop the exact same size. except it is a compaq the model im not sure of i cant find the label. So what i would like to do, is take apart the screen on my dell. and then take apart the screen on my compaq and swap them out. Like i previously stated they are the same size screen im just wondering if the few wires will connect with eachother? can someone please help answer this question for me

They need to use the same type of backlight (LED or CCFL) and if the resolutions are different, it may not work. Also, the connector for the display cable may not be in the same location preventing you from connecting it.

tijo is pretty much spot on. There are also other factors to consider, such as physical dimensions and screw placement. Also, the inverter is something you need to take into consideration.
