installing my first ssd now, and coming from WinXP so i need some enlightenment

    quick questions

    1. ive heard you're not suppose to use defrag on SSDs, is that true?
    2. what about windows system restore or windows backup?
    3. what do i do with windows page files? does win7 use page files? what is a ramdisk?
    4. also, i dont know squat about prefetching either, so tips about that would help too
    5. is TRIM auto enabled on win7?

sorry if these are basic, i'm just not familiar with what is required for SSDs

    thanks

Yes, it's true, NEVER defrag a SSD, make sure auto defrag in windows is turned off
No need to touch backup, you may or may not want to limit space taken by system restore depending on the size of your SSD.
Leave the page file alone or shrink it in size, but i'd keep at least a small one. It also depends on how much RAM you have installed.
Leave prefetch and superfetch alone, you don't need to do anything about those.
Usually, yes it should detect the drive as a SSD, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Defrag should be disabled by default and TRIM enabled if you do a clean install of windows 7, but in rare cases, it might not happen, so check after installing just in case.

    thanks

i've got 16gb memory installed. for some reason it looks like by default i have a 16gb page file? whats an appropriate size for that?

when i first got my laptop, it had 500gb HDD in there. i created the lenovo factory restore cd's through their utility. then i installed my SSD, and i used those cd's that i made. i don't think that qualifies as a fresh install, right?

where can i find check if TRIM is enabled?

With 16GB of RAM, shrink that page file to 256MBmin and 4GB max. It will remain at 256GB unless you need it and if you need more it won't crash. You will not need more room on the page file though so it'll stay at 16GB unless you do some real intensive work.

Your install doesn't qualify as a clean install indeed.

To check for TRIM: Make Sure TRIM Is Enabled for Your Solid State Drive in Windows 7 for Better Performance. A simple google search would have given you the same answer. ;)

Well, depending on the SSD you get, some come with a software toolbox, the toolbox might have that info too.
