Hi I don’t know if this should be placed here or in the accessory section but since I’ve added two usb 3.0 I will call it and after market upgrade.

I’m having issue with this startech usb 3.0 expresscard in that if I use it with my usb 3.0 external drive it will work find for a few minutes then it will suddenly disconnect the hard drive and you won’t be able to get it back without pulling the expresscard out and back in this as u can tell make the card useless. I have tried using the drivers that come on the included mini disk, on startech’s website and the latest renesas usb 3.0 drivers. The only difference is with the newest drivers and then while the usb 3.0 hard drive no longer disappears it will randomly decide that the computer can’t locate item and nothing on the hard drive can be access. Videos pop up but VLC player says some message about not be able to read files. This is happening on a clean fresh install of windows 7 64bit and it was happening before i reinstalled windows.

The laptop I’m using is in my sig my M15x and I haven’t seen this issue any ware else searching Google and i know some people on this forum have use the flush mounted usb 3.0 expresscards so any help that you give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Here is a link to the card

Does the external HDD have it's own power? Is this the issue?

Or, does the ExpressCard Adapter overheat, causing the disconnections?

If it works fine with a USB key without disconnecting, I would be looking at the external HDD as the 'problem' - or possibly, even the USB cable too.

    Good luck.

Well it looks like the external hard drive is not getting enough power as my powered external drive is not having any problems at all with the expresscard adapter and my portable external usb 3.0 drives are working fine with my other usb 2.0 ports.

However the cable the supplied for power is usb powered and that doesn't make any difference. I have even pluged the power cable into an Iphone usb power adapter and that has not worked. I have had a very long chat with a tech support person last night and his surgestion is to get a real power adapter as aposed to the cable provided so i'm going to see if this makes a difference tonight.

Also how would I tell if the exprescard is over heating? The area around the card is not that hot so i dont really think its that.

The problem could also lie within the chipset of the enclosure you're trying to use. There are lots of incompatibility issues with external hard drives and USB 3.0, either in Expresscard form or built in to the notebook itself. The issue manifests itself in the form of random disconnects. Does the problematic enclosure work when connected to your USB 2.0 ports?

ok well the power adapter didn't work. Its something to do with my laptop as the ExpressCard and my hard drives work with my dads laptop. i know that this type of adapter (not this brand but is the same i think) works with an Alienware M15x as there is an old thread about it in the Alienware forum i may have to post in there for some help. may have to try getting the adapter that they used.
