I need about 400gb of storage. I've 500€ to spend. I already have 1x320gb 7200rpm. my notebook has 2 hdd slots.
I was thinking about an SSD. but what should I buy?
    cheap 2xSSD's in raid?
    1x320gb + SSD?
    2x320gb?
    2xgood ssd's with 400gb is very expensive.

What about a home server? :)
Dave always recommends them - I will want to get one - but that'll need financing - so some time to go for me.

This would give you more storage but most importantly a backup with the possibility of software raid.

    Oh, OK.

I suppose for space a HDD is really the best otpion then.
Just add something in the second slot for more storage - keep the old HDD unless its too slow.

SSDs will be fast but expensive.

HDD is as it is now, but much better value for money.

    but I've 500€ to spend and I would like much better performance and a 320gb 7200 it's like 75€.
I dunno if it gives much more performance though...

A SSD will give you better performance - the HDD, not sure.

But don't spend money because you can spend it.

I'd go for Intel X25-M for your OS and applications.

Sounds to me like you value storage capacity over performance. Personally, I would get two Western Digital 500GB WD5000BEVT's. You'll be ready for prime time with nearly a terabyte of storage.

I just can't see spending $700 dollars (500 Euros) on two SSD's that will barely hit 250GB and cost you twice as much money. And more importantly, are you able to find 400GB worth of SSD storage for 500 Euros?

no. I value performance! that's why I made this topic. the only requirement is that I need to have 400gb. I don't need more. I don't need 500gb. 320gb is a bit insufficiency.
maybe I'll just buy a very good SSD for OS and stay with the 320gb hdd.
2x256gb ssd's would be awesome (and expensive). maybe later next year... *cough*
maybe a 1x256gb ssd and then upgrade it later to another 256gb ssd?

anyone knowns a good 256gb ssd for my budget? is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609395 any good?

Exactly. And then when Scorpio Black 500GB is released, sell your 320GB and replace it.

Since you already have 320GB, just get the Intel X25-M 80GB for OS/programs. If you need a bit more space and don't mind a very slight decrease in performance go for OCZ Vertex 120GB or even the OCZ Summit 120GB (or any Indilinx/Samsung variant).
