    Hi,

I am getting defective laptop off of ebay to upgrade my Compal FL90 (most have a defective 8600M GT).

Now I have this laptop here, it works again, but there are strange vertical blue lines when the laptop is running (see image of Ubuntu 10.10 bootable).

Strange thing is, the lines are also there when the laptop is off (see other image) - so I figure it has something to do with the LCD. I never took these apart, so I am wondering, what could be wrong here, as I am without a clue.

Inverter, LCD panel, backlight - not really, right? But what then ...

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Cheers

It's a broken panel. How it has happened, I cannot say.

You need to replace the LCD. That's the only possible repair.

Just curious, but how does the rest of the screen look like?

Some cracked LCD panels can be repaired, but for the average consumer it isn't worth it. You'd be better off with a new LCD.

The rest is perfect, its only the four "cracks" (are it cracks, actually).

I am still a bit confused.

When you say, I have to replace the LCD, you basically mean the whole display, but the plastic frame, right? It's not that I could replace one part/layer of the LCD.

And, when looking at this picture , which layer is the one that got busted? Or can you only take guesses, too, like I do ..?

    Thanks a lot!

    Cheers

Not really possible for people to replace just a single layer. You would have to purchase the whole panel.
