Here http://share.ovi.com/media/currentresident.public/currentresident.10225 is a photo of the sunbeamtech SATA and IDE hard drive rescue kit. The kit is very intuitive to use there is a cd but I don't know what is on it my computer doesn't have a CD drive. It turns out the power adaptor was not needed for the hard drive shown. Use it anyway there is always a chance of burning out your USB port. You will certainly need it for hard drives with bad bearings. Plug it in to the USB port and the computer will recognize it and windows explorer will come up. Windows explorer showed me partition D on the hard drive but not partition C. Go to computer and all the partitions will be shown however it renames them to avoid conflict with the partitions already on your computer. All the files are shown even the operating system and there is nothing to prevent you from deleting those files. I transfered all my old files to my new computer then ran ccleaner it erased the files in the recycle bin on the old drive freeing up space. You can run some programs from the old drive. I don't yet know if you can boot from the external drive but I do plan on trying it with ubuntu installed.
