The HDD in my Dell laptop is showing an error code. I told Dell and they sent a refurb, under warranty. I am unsure of the best method of transferring data from old to new. Can someone explain, in laymans terms the best method for doing this? I have a very moderate amount of documents and pics, etc.. I do have a DVD burner, if this is the easiest method. Thanks.

I usually just use a DVD and burn the files worth saving, or a flash drive which is easier but only if you have one. That way you can just copy and paste and it's quicker.

Sounds easy enough. I have never burned a disc, just pop it in and I will be prompted, I hope? How do I know I have copied everything I need? How do I then transfer it on to the new HDD? Sorry, but I know little about the mechanics of puters. Just use them to surf.

Well, actually, I would say the easiest way is to use backup software. I use and recommend Norton Ghost. You should be able to find it at a local store that has a large selection of software (or you can buy it online and download it). Then, you can create a backup onto a DVD, and put it in, restart the computer, and restore it onto the new hard drive. This process is designed for people in your position. If you have anymore questions, I can try to answer them (I have done this many times with Ghost).

I sent you an email. Thanks.

I am trying to decide between burning the data to DVD(preferred), or getting an external HDD.
