Atheros AR5B95 Laptop Wireless Half Mini PCI E Card New for Dell XPS 8300 | eBay (something look like this) came with laptops nowadays for wifi internet and it runs on pcie lane. my laptop came with two mini pcie slots however one runs on USB lane. I needed mini pcie port with pcie lane with some mod but don't want to sacrifice wifi internet, and don't want an external usb wifi module. so I found this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270606959316&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

anyone know if that USB wifi module will work with laptop's original built in antenna which goes into the LCD? it has u.FL x2 connector at the end, one for AUX and one for MAIN which is same as one would find on the 1st ebay link.

What kinda laptop do you have that be the first thing we need to know before knowing what hardware works.

i have an alienware m18x, but most laptop uses mini pcie wifi module card from intel anyway. basically I am talking in general as I'd like this to work and apply on any laptop.

Not always because of the white-listing of WiFi cards some will work and some will not. I would get one that is Generic Intel 5100 or one specifying for Dell laptop and the one you listed might work but also that card doesn't indicate it is dual band so you might get N but at 2.4ghz not at the 5ghz you want. So unless the WiFi says dual band or the seller states otherwise I stay away from single band cards. But check with Dell/Alienware site with your service tag and there the driver download will tell you the Wifi it support and you can go from there to see what cards will work. Sometimes the newer ones work but isn't listed but you need to match up the driver for the support wifi card and then from there looks for other higher or newer version of wifi that could possibly work as long as you get the drivers from the WIFI site not Dell as those might not be the drivers for it.

whitelist would be a problem but not in this case because I am not using a different wifi module that runs on pcie lane on a different laptop. I understand the mini pcie slot will not take some card but this is not the case here as that slot will not be used for wifi internet in my case. what I am using is a wifi USB module.

in the link posted above that weird looking USB wifi module was meant for external because how bad reception is inside a computer. if you ever had a USB wifi adapter put inside a computer you'll realize signal is completely terrible and unusable, which is why they put antenna in the laptop LCD/display and then hook it up to wifi module for way better reception.

now I got a DMC port that runs on USB lane and I'd like that weird looking one to go inside of the laptop for various reasons. theres no whitelist here imo. it is just a mini pcie port runs on USB lane and with an usb adapter, many USB devices gets picked up (ie. USB stick, USB wifi dongle, bluetooth dongle etc) my main concern was if this particular USB to wifi module will work (the u.FL connector with antenna) since I am removing the original wifi adapter I still want to use the antenna for best reception, while leaving the module inside the laptop.

well it all works out fine. if anyone wanted to have that module on DMC or mini pcie slots that runs on USB line, it will work with laptop antenna.
