My gateway P8705u has a P8400 CPU, and i ordered a refurb lenovo R400 which comes with a P8600 CPU.

I want to switch the CPU's around, and I am going to let best buy do the switching for the gateway since I don't want to void my gateway warranty.

    my questions are:

    1. will the two CPU's switch be okay for either laptops?
    2. am i going to void the warranty for lenovo if i take the CPU out and replace it?
    3. whats the best option

1.- Yup. They use the same power and theoretically generate the same amount of heat. The P8600 just has a slightly higher clock speed.
2.- No, I believe Lenovo will let you swap compatible CPUs. But just in case you ever send in your laptop for service, I would put the original processor back in.
3.- Personally, I wouldn't bother, as the performance difference is very very small. But if you switch the CPUs, it won't hurt.

the gateway is from bestbuy and they said the warranty is not voided if i bring them the laptop with the components to upgrade it with.

unless you are talking about lenovo warranty, i guess the warranty can be voided for the lenovo.
im going to have to look into this for definite answer.

MidnightSun makes a great point here; you probably won't even feel the difference between the two cpus, so why switch them? You could if you wanted to, but it just seems easier to leave them be.

IMHO it only seems like more trouble than it's worth, it's a too small performance increase to even think about swapping CPU's.
And secondly, paying those guys for swapping them only makes it less attractive and really REALLY not worth it.

If you knew how to do it yourself, you could try and see for yourself how small the performance increase is, i am willing to bet you, that you can't even tell a difference between them CPU's if you blindtest them.

I formerly upgraded from 1.83Ghz/2MB cache to 2.33Ghz/4MB cache and i can say that the performance win isn't even noticeable in 95% of all things, and my upgrade is alot bigger than what you're thinking about. I also got a 2.0Ghz c2d and that one i can't even feel a difference from one or another.

I bet the person didnt know it was a laptop or just didnt understand. Im pretty sure bestbuy dosent dissemble laptops for a cpu upgrade. The guy probaly thought you wanted to upgrade ram or somthing they do upgrade ram.
