will upgrading to a t7200 processor in a notebook hurt my battery life a lot compared to the t5500 also is the real world performance worth it. i am debating between the t5500 and 2gigs of ram and the t7200 and 1 gig of ram.

Negligible. All of them are manufactured to a certain standard and usually processors in the same family use the same amount of power. If you are choosing between the T5500 & 2GB vs. T7200 & 1GB, get the latter since RAM is easily upgradeable rather than the processor.
