So of a couple of laptops I am considering, one has a T5750, and the other has a T8100. My current laptop has a T7300. How big of a downgrade would it be to get the T5750? and if I go with the T8100, will I notice any speed increase?

Minor on all. Lower FSB will reduce RAM bandwidth. T7300 and T8100 should be about the same. 100Mhz clock compensates for less L2. T8100 little less heat and power draw.

Unless you buy a very good stopwatch all is academic.

If you're willing to get the T8100. I'd say go for it. If I recall correctly, it has 3mb cache? I'd assume it'd be far more useful than the T5750, although it really depends on what you need it for. But as I said, if you can get the T8100, no reason not to.

In all honesty, you're not going to notice a big difference moving to either of them. The 5750 is 2ghz w/2mb cache and 667mhz bus, while the 7300 is 4mb cache 800mhz bus, which does provide a bit more "oomph" under certain tasks, but nothing you're likely to miss. The 8100 is 2.1ghz with an 800 mhz bus, but only has 3mb of cache. The real improvement comes in the form of heat dissipation with the 8100. Its using 45nm vs 65nm manufacturing tech of the others, which results in cooler temperatures. In the end, youre not likely to see a big difference either way, but if it were me, I would go with the 8100 mainly because of the cooler temps. Hope this helps.

    Thanks guys...

I'm going to use the laptop for schoolwork, music, and web surfing. Nothing very intense, since I won't be gaming, or using program like 3dmax or anything.

I agree with Dook (can't believe I just said that) T8100 is a little better than T5750. Faster FSB less heat more L2.
