quick question, in general is the upgrade from a t6600 to a p8800 worth $150?

    thanks

If you can sell the t6600 on eBay, then yes. The t6600 is worth about $70. So $150 minus $70(I'm good at math) is $80 for a p8800. If you are buying a new laptop and the base model has the t6600. With the next best processor being the p8800 it may be worth it. Consider this: the p8800 runs cooler and consumes less power. t6600 TDP 35 watt, p8800 TDP 25 watt. Plus the p8800 is much faster and newer.

Are you sure your board will support the p8800? It has a different fsb than the t6600.

What are you using it for? If you have to ask, really good chance it is a waste of money.

They are in fact just as new as each other (penryn E0) and the P8800 will use more power. TDP does not mean what most people try to make it out to be. There is roughly a linear relationship between power consumption and frequency and a roughly square relationship between voltage and power consumption. The P8800 is about 21% more powerful than a T6600 though. The main useful difference between the two though is the P8800's support for hardware accelerating virtualization.

as of now, probably the most intensive tasks are done in photoshop/illustrator. would like to explore other programs too in design

i'm going to school as an engineer, absolutely no idea if any software (if even any at all is used) will require much, haha

vid editing and music mixing may be possibilities... but their just interests

You're probably better off getting it with the T6600 now and if you want to speed up some cpu intensive tasks a little bit in photoshop you could upgrade to something better and maybe cheaper later. A P8800 really isn't going to speed stuff up much over a T6600. Times where you would have to wait 10 seconds would become 8 seconds.

    go T6600.

upgrade option to P8800 for $150 more is not worth it ;)

Depends, if he likes games like supreme commander then yeah its worth it.

His HD4650 will let him play those sorts of games.

But you can do what I said. After you buy the laptop, replace the processor and sell the old one. The upgrade will only cost $80. Its defiantly worth it.

That really depends on how you define "definitely worth it." The P8800 will have 21% more processing power at its disposal and will accelerate virtual machines. There really isn't much else to it.

have you considered looking at the current gen tech? 32nm i-core CPUs, 40nm HD5xxx GPUs. These are both more powerful and battery efficient than the 45nm C2D and 55nm HD4650.

Or as I said, there are certain games that are more CPU dependant. ANY CPU bound program will run faster.

For $80 Id say its worth it. You get 400mhz per core faster, 1066 FSB compared to 800, and an extra MB of cache.

but it's a new laptop with upgrade option from T6600 to P8800 for $150 more.
definitely not worth it. I'd agree with DIY upgrade or OC the cpu.

$150 if he couldn't sell the T6600...which Im sure wouldn't be THAT hard to do I wouldnt think so...but there are no guarantees to a sell though...

I've done this EXACT upgrade on my Vaio CW. It is worth it, trust me. Especially if you intend to use it "Power User" style.
    Games run smoother.
    Windows boots faster.
It features VT-x and Intel DA.
Better battery life by a noticeable bit.
    Cooler running.
And (for what it's worth) a faster bus speed (and most of the time) synchronous memory speed with the FSB.

No you don't get it ..

OP wants to buy a new laptop (Sony) ..
and the price for configuration with P8800 is $150 more than T6600 configuration.
    so there's no T6600 for sale :p

    it's a "get T6600" VS "get P8800 and pay $150 more"

So I got the vaio fw590, and streaming video on it is choppy. Would I see smoother playback if I change the processor?

Sound like your Internet connection is slow. The t6600 is plenty fast for streaming video. Usually when the video is choppy it means slow connection.

What if the video is already buffered and it's still choppy?

Update the video card driver. What type of video are you watching? Is it in HD or what? Also try uninstalling some of the trial-ware on your laptop. Here,s a program that uninstalls it all at once: Download | The PC Decrapifier

Flash 10.1 and the new ATI Catalyst 10.6 drivers feature hardware accelerated video. Do you have those installed? The FW in all configurations should play flawless HD Flash video. It's your drivers or software configuration... Promise. ;)
