    temperature mistake?

    This is after about an hour of gaming on my 4870... must be a mistake right?

    Could be !!
    Try and stress your GPU using rthdribl or 3DMark06, and note the temps.

    Hm well I used the built-in renderer in ATI Tray Tools and the highest it ever got at 50% fan was 62C so I'm guessing the 128C was some kind of error.

    Well HWMonitor does seem to report all the other values correctly....
    (Then again, it could be a false report !!)

    well it is possible for it to get that hot. The rest of the report seems correct, so if it may as well be reading the temperatures right.
    When gaming, open the side panel, and feel the graphics card. If it burns you, than you know its reading the temperatures right.
    Most high end graphics cards can run 80-90C, and the highest I have ever seen was 92C, but that was on a 7950GX2. Your 4870 may be able to reach 128C, and if it is really getting that hot, it may not last very long.

    I know with riva tuner, you can control fans on nVidia cards, so maybe with ATi Tool, you can control the fan speeds.
