I got some ddr2-800 memory for my sony vaio laptop. It came with 2gb(one stick) and it has two spots for memory. I purchased 4gb (2 2gb sticks). I know it is the right fit and the right type and for some reason the new stuff doesn't work right. While using the two new sticks, the screen gets blue flickering bars and then crashed once. The second time it just froze like that. So I tried to put the sticks in one by one. The first worked okay for 25 minutes and then during writing an email it did the flickering bar, frozen thing. I then took it out. Now I am working on the second stick and I ran a ram test on it (not sure how great that worked) and have been running normal apps, uploaded pics to email and have been on this forum for about an hour. Is it safe to say this stick works?
How does everybody else test? Supposedly this is crucial memory but a friend got it online from an independent seller cheap.

Simple Memtest86+ , just download and burn the ISO to a CD and boot it.

Seems like first stick is defective. Get a RMA, you might need to send back both sticks since it's part of a kit.

They were two packs. One in each.

If it's not a kit w/ 2 sticks, then just return the 1 defective stick.

Okay I got another dumb question. The comp specs say it can accept up to 8GB of ram and it has two slots. If I have 2gb in one slot, can I put a 4gb stick in the other slot? I have never dealt with 6 gb before, but vista is a monster.

yes it is possible, if your chipset really does support up to 8gb.
