Is it just me, or are ATA 7200 rpm 2.5" hd suddenly vanishing from the market? Or is this just a Canadian Phenomenon? Tigerdirect.ca no longer lists the hitachi 7k100 100 gb or 80 gb drives - I hope this only means they are temporarily sold out, as I wish to upgrade some time in the near future.

Everything's slowly making it's way to SATA.

Most HDDs now have the new Serial ATA Interface, offering better data throughout speeds compared to the Parallel ATA Interface. Unfortunately, SATA is not compatable with PATA.

As you've only got 512 MB of RAM, and youve already got a 7200rpm HDD, I see no reason for you to upgrade.

If you are just looking for more storage, then I would recommend buying an external HDD.

Unfortunately I currently have a 4200 rpm HDD! The one lousy thing that came with this laptop was the hard drive, and I was thinking of getting the hitachi 7K100 for xmas. Definitely wanted the 100 GB, both for size and supposedly better performance than the 60 or 80 GB. Found one place that still lists it ( www.ncix.ca), but they want $200, much higher than most anywhere else.

Too bad newegg and others won't ship to Canada. Even with the shipping costs, it would still be less than many of the prices here. C'est la vie...

Could you find a different vendor that shipts to canada? Surely you can find it somewhere. Or maybe your local computer store could custom ordre one for you, so long as Hitachi is one of their vendors (or one of the vendors carries Hitachi)

Had the same luck with a desktop Hitachi SATA drive, it looks like very few vendors are left in Canada who carry that brand.

If you are open to other brand, Seagate has notebook drives, 5 year CDN warranty on top and it looks like you can get one for $176.04 from Frontier PC

Here is a nice price search site for both Canadian & US Vendors.

the link to the Seagate 100GB IDE ATA6 7,200RPM

A stupid question, just to double check...
It's not possible to upgrade my notebook (with ATA drive) to be able to use SATA drives... or it is possible?

Thanks for the links. I had considered hitachi first as the price was cheaper and it is as good if not better than the seagate, but I'm not picky. Feels like a rip-off though for $200 with tax.

    germancasaretto:

No, the SATA is determined by the motherboard. For desktops there are IDE to SATA adapters, but I doubt they'd exist for laptops. Besides, they still run no better than PATA.

Thanks Cheffy. I thought so, but I just wanted to be sure about it.
I'll try to get a 7200 PATA drive then.
