I'm pretty sure the fastest hard drive is the 320 GB 7200 RPM from WD. But again I was told this in the beginning of July, info might change.

    Found the name: WD3200BEKT

    The 10000rpm is 2.5" but 12.5mm thick.

Currently the fastest mechanical harddrive is the Hitachi 15K450
But its an enterprise 3.5" drive
Not sure what the fastest SSD is

For laptops, the 500gb 7200rpm WD should be the fastest at the moment

    hey, thanks for the replys
about the ssd, it wouldn't help me as i need 2.5" drive ;)

so the WD Scorpio Black is the fastest, the 500gb is the fastest? or it doesn't mater how much gb

second question, sorry for the noobnes but now i have an 5400rpm drive, the games which installed on the drive will load faster with the WD Scorpio Black?

    thanks

The game will load faster but not by much. Sometimes the single platter 250GB WD Black will be faster than the 2 platter 500GB drive.

There are dozens of different 2.5" form factor SSD's built to work in laptops. Check them out as prices are dropping and they are a lot faster than mechanical HDD's and will use less power meaning longer battery life and less heat. Additional they are completely silent.

I recommend OCZ for good value SSD's and intel's own SSD's for top of the line performance.

In fact, I don't even know of any SSDs that are 3.5".

I'm fairly certain all internal SSDs are 2.5", not 3.5". Of course, excluding the mini-PCIe and ExpressCard models.

There are 3.5" SSD's The MTRON 7000 was available in 3.5" sizes

Please note, the WD Velociraptor will not work in any laptop. It is too thick, and requires a hefty 12V line, which no laptop has

Either drive will be fine. Honestly, the variation between each hard drive is more than any difference between companies. Some people will have more success with Seagate, others will have more success with WD. If you do a blind test, the performance difference will not be noticeable enough for almost all users to differentiate between them. Just make sure you get the newest line and not the older models, especially if you are not getting the highest capacity.
