How do you know it is the cpu that is slow (sure, it is - but what workflow falters for you)?
Could an O/S upgrade (Win8) be an option?
Is an SSD a possibility if you're looking for a responsiveness increase?
Could you track down some inexpensive RAM to get to 4GB or possibly 8GB in your 64bit O/S?
While a processor upgrade may offer higher performance - you can see that or more with O/S, RAM and an SSD upgrade instead.
With a platform going onto 7 years old - it makes much more sense to consider a newer/current model.
There are $450 notebooks with almost three times the raw performance than what you have now. Almost any cpu upgrade you can do will be at most in the ~30% range.

Will see what more information you can provide, but hope this helps in the meantime. -
a newer laptop is out of the question at the moment.
it was just a general question to what other cpu i could use.
the boards only upgradable to 2gb of ram so theres no point in a 64bit o/s??
win8 is slowly winning me over...but ill stick with win7 for a little longer.
thank you for the advice.......do you know of any compatable cpus?? -

Sorry, others will offer better advice for specific cpu's for your platform.
Have you tried 2x 2GB RAM (or even 2x 4GB RAM) SoDIMM's? While the official line is they won't/don't work - that is not true in all cases. Buy with a no-fee return policy and check if your system could be upgraded easily too.
Win8 (x64 or x86) with at least 4GB RAM or more will breathe new life into your system - it did for a circa 2005 workstation that was running like a diesel engine with Win7 (which was still a marked improvement over XP and Vista). Download a trial and install onto a new HDD/SSD to see how much better your system can run.
Good luck. -

You should be able to upgrade to a t8000 series or a t9300, t9500.
The t9300 has a passmark score of 1743 while the t2390 is 905. Thats almost double the score.
You want a real life scenario of what is affected by CPU upgrades? Last night I upgraded a celeron 900 single core 2.2ghz processor to a t3200 2ghz dual core, on 2gb RAM. Before the upgrade, webpages took ages to load data - and not because of the internet connection. The page and cursor would freeze up for upwards of 10 seconds at a time. And, before the upgrade, the laptop was unable to play runescape. This is why I highly recommend even a cheap CPU upgrade as it can change the performance of everyday tasks completely.
Although, first you should get at least 4gb of RAM in there, and probably at least reformat the HDD to win7 and put all your data somewhere else if its filling up the hard drive. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Might want to double check in Acer subforum, GL960 are infamous for whitelisting Core 2 Duo's, it's a gimped chipset.
Point in case, don't spend money upgrading a 5+ year old laptop, bite the bullet and get a new one. RAM for new laptops is so cheap. -
ok thanks for the info.
i have just noticed it says in the Specifications..... "5320 Intel Celeron mobile processor". but i have a Intel Pentium dualcore T2390.
am i missing something??
