I'm the happy new owner of an HP L2000 (thanks partly to the good reviews I saw here). I bought it with the cheapest option HDD, a [samsung] 60GB. My plan was to put this HDD in my old laptop (dead HDD) and re-sell. Meanwhile, I bought a new hitachi 80 GB HDD to go in my L2000.

I looked at the how-to advice on the forum and elsewhere, unplugged my machine, removed the battery, removed the caddy w/ HDD. Removed HDD from caddy, removed adapter for the connector, removed jumper. Put all on new HDD and put everything back together.

When I turn the machine on, it says there's a media device error and to check cables. Since the connector pins sort of mesh with their opposite numbers when you lay the drive into the bay, I don't see how I could have it out of whack. Can someone tell me what I did wrong? Jumper in the wrong place, maybe??

    Bleah.

    Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I tried that. I'm going to try the jumper in a different position. Any other ideas?

Hi again, gang. Ok, I tried putting the original HDD back into my notebook, and everything works! So, in theory, I am not a total idiot.

The original HDD is a samsung, and the one I tried to replace it with is a[n?] hitachi. I noticed that the orig. drive appears to be just the tiniest bit smaller; there's more leeway when I put it in the caddy. So now my question is, could that tiny, tiny size difference be the cause of my problem? Should I be trying to [carefully!] squiggle the drive into a particular position inside the caddy, i.e. closer or farther away from the connector end, or something?

I'm bewildered. Thanx again for any help.
