The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    I went to device manager and device that needed to be updated so i clicked update online and it couldn't find the update.
    My laptop is an Acer Aspire 7720-4030
    The device is in the "folder" called Other devices
    location: on PCI bus
    Device status:
    The drivers for this device are not installed (code28)

    What operating system? Windows XP, Vista, or 7?
    If it's XP, when you double-click the device, go to the "Details" tab, and choose "Hardware Ids" from the dropdown at the top. You should get something like this:

    In this case, the vendor ID is 14E4, and the device ID is 170C. If you search in Google for these numbers, you should be able to find out what the device is. (in my case, I was using a Broadcom 10/100 network card as an example).

    Not sure if this works the same way in Vista or 7, I haven't used either of them.
