I am considering updating my chipset software... however, I really don't know what this means, and I'm a little hesitant to go for it. I'm specifically referring to this article:

Sometimes I get the poor audio performance and frequent crashes with some of the later versions of audio editing programs... I was hoping this may be the solution. What does it mean? and is it a risky thing to do?
Thanks.
PS-currently running Intel C2D 945GM chipset

it´s just updating drivers, nothing more and nothing less. Intel´s chipset software is a bundle of drivers for that specific chipset, in your case the 945GM ( with integrated graphics), and it contains drivers for the onboard hardware.
but you should have a look at HP´s drivers and support page, and see what date their latest chipset software carries. if it´s really old, you should think of installing new ones directly from microsoft.
but i don´t think that a driver for audio is integrated in the chipset software. you should take a look and check whats your soundcard, and get the latest drivers for that too.
basicly newer drivers fix some problems, and give you better performance ( at least they should)
updating chipset software?
